Text on back of envelope: President Ronald Reagan sponsored death squads in Angola, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mozambique and Nicaragua which resulted in the murders of over 500,000 innocent civilians. He illegally attacked Grenada and Libya, and defied a World Court ruling against his illegal Nicaraguan war. In the Iran-Contra scandal, Reagan violated US law by issuing a “retroactive finding” authorizing the swapping of arms for hostages with the Iranian mullahs. He defied the will of Congress, and subverted the US Constitution, by diverting funds from these arms sales to his illegal wars in Central America. Reagan’s officials then obstructed justice, destroying evidence of these crimes. Ronald Reagan supported the genocidal Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and the Argentinian “Dirty War” — as well as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Additionally, Ronald Reagan violated his oath of office by failing to enforce federal labor and environmental laws. His lax oversight set the stage for massive financial scandals, including the $500 billion $1.4 trillion Savings and Loan bailout. And though it was perfectly legal, taxes on working people to pay for income tax cuts for the wealthy. By the time Reagan left office, one hundred thirty eight members of his administration had been either investigated, indicted, or convicted. |
